The Extragalactic and Cosmology Department at the Instituto de Astronomía, UNAM (IA-UNAM) in Mexico City, invites applications for one postdoctoral research position to work in the framework of the project “Evolution of the AGN Torus and its Relation with its Environment” (recently accepted CONHACyT project “Ciencia de Frontera 2023” CF-2023-G-100, PI O. González Martín, IRyA-UNAM) with Prof. Erika Benítez and Prof. Irene Cruz-González. The position is related to the study of galaxy mergers and its relation with the torus large scale environment. Among the qualifications required are a PhD in astronomy, experience in extragalactic research, preferably in AGN topics, and some experience in Integral Field Spectroscopy optical or near-infrared analysis, since the applicant will work with MEGARA, MUSE, MaNGA and JWST data. The position is fixed for one year and can be extended for one more year, with a salary of $27,000 (Mexican pesos) per month. EXTENDED PERIOD: Due to delays in the grant budget assignment, we have extended the period of document reception. The NEW starting date is September 2023. The Gravitational Wave and Data Analysis Group (http://www.gravitationalwaves.mx) at the Physics Department of the University of Guadalajara is looking for outstanding postdoctoral researcher to work in the understanding and search of gravitational waves (GW) from exotic astrophysical objects as core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) and stellar-mass binary systems. Our group is a multidisciplinary joint effort between physicists, astronomers and data scientists working together in areas of black holes and supernovas, numerical relativity, GW, multi-messenger astronomy, and data analysis and machine/deep learning methods. Researchers, graduate and undergraduate students in our group work together in a dynamic research environment including a research-dedicated cluster computer, a prototype of laser-interferometer gravitational wave detector and regular internal talk series as well as presentations by invited national and international speakers. We also have active collaborations with international researchers at Tecnológico de Monterrey, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in USA and Universidad de Mar de Plata in Argentina. Description of the positions: Ø In this position, researchers will be involved in theoretical and numerical studies of the formation mechanisms of supernovae, neutron stars and black holes. As well as in the development of computational methods for the search, detection and parameter estimation of GW transients using freely available strain data from the LIGO-VIRGO observatories. Experience with data handling, digital signal processing and machine/deep learning techniques (irrespective of the application), as well as good programming skills (Python, Matlab or C++) are desirable for this position. The candidate will be working with Dr. Claudia Moreno in close collaboration with Dr. Javier M. Antelis, Professor of the Tecnológico de Monterrey. Dear Community, The Santander Scholarship Program has announced the “ChatGPT 2023” Scholarship, whose aim is to strengthen knowledge and employability through training in the ChatGPT artificial intelligence chatbot prototype. Who can apply? The entire university community: professors, administrative staff and students from all semesters and areas of study, as well as recent graduates from public or private Mexican universities. Characteristics of the Scholarships: Scholarship recipients will have access to 58 self-managed online courses that address topics in ChatGPT (the list of courses can be found in the legal bases of the program available in the section "Legal bases of the call”), which allows the scholarship recipients to take the courses of his/her preference. The Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT) Call for Proposals for the observing season 2024-S1 has been announced. This LMT Call for Proposals offers the opportunity to conduct night-time observations with the LMT in the period 8th January to 30th September 2024. The goal of the project is the homogeneous characterization of the kinematics, ages and chemical abundances of open clusters and cluster groups of all ages, in the local disk investigating their formation, evolution and relation with the field stars, and with the Galaxy. To this aim, the data of the ESA Gaia space mission will be coupled with high quality spectroscopic ground based data by the new generation spectrograph WEAVE at the WHT. The selected person will be enrolled at the PhD School in Astronomy of the Padova University. This PhD project is part of the new MWGaiaDN MSCA Doctoral Network, which consists of 10 academic partners across Europe at which 12 PhD students will be active in the network researching a range of topics with Gaia and other data. The network students will be able to participate in a range of cross network training and research events. This project includes a number of secondments at the partner universities of the network. The project requires handling big data sets, data mining techniques, and the applications of clustering and machine learning methods to large databases. It requires very good software and programming skills. The eligible candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Italy for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date. The successful applicant is expected to undertake research activities in at least one of the following topics: Characterisation the hot plasma emission from the Milky Way center, the disk and its relations with the Galactic wind and corona; Characterisation (spectral and-or timing) of the Galactic X-ray point sources (variable and-or transients); Study of the X-ray counterparts of the sources of cosmic rays (PeVatrons). The project, performed under the supervision of Dr. Gabriele Ponti, will revolve around the analysis and interpretation of X-ray data from the Chandra large survey of the central degrees of the Milky Way, the XMM Heritage program covering the central disc of the Milky Way, as well as the public eROSITA data, aimed at scanning the Milky Way disc, center, corona and halo. The IAC has announced the opening of the next call for the IAC Early Career Visitor Program. The goal of the program is to enhance the development of astronomers during the early stages of their scientific careers, leveraging the unparalleled scientific environment offered by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias. The IAC Early Career Visitor Program will finance stays of one to three months at the IAC for researchers with up to four years of postdoctoral experience. The IAU is inviting applications for its 2023 PhD prize, an award which celebrates the outstanding accomplishments made globally by PhD researchers in astrophysics. The deadline for applications is 15 December 2023. The IAU PhD Prize is open to candidates from any country, regardless of whether the country is an IAU National Member. In addition, a separate prize is available to be awarded to applicants from developing countries (defined as those not in the OECD). Eligible PhD theses for the 2023 Prize are those which have been defended between 16 December 2022 and 15 December 2023. ASTRON is excited to announce the Bell Burnell Fellowship. The fellowship is named in honour, and with support of, Dame Susan Jocelyn Bell Burnell – the discoverer of pulsars, pioneer in the field of radio astronomy, and champion of equitable representation, acknowledgement and achievement in astronomy. The Bell Burnell Postdoctoral Fellowship is designed to help scientists build upon emerging strong careers as independent researchers. We currently have 2 positions available, and both are 3+1 year positions with competitive salaries comparable to other radio astronomy fellowships. Applications are due 22 December 2023. The astrophysical team at the Institut UTINAM (Besançon Observatory) is offering a post-doc position related to « The stellar-substellar limit in the large scale survey Euclid ». The position is funded by the Université of Franche-Comté, for 12 months, renewable. The successful applicant will work on the identification of ultra cool dwarfs in Euclid fields, and may propose new identification techniques and explore the possibility of using the precise PSF of Euclid to identify close binaries. Other challenges can be addressed, such as to determine the luminosity function, infer the most likely low-mass end of the initial mass function and explore its degree of universality in different components of the Milky Way. The University Mayor (UMAYOR) extends an invitation for qualified candidates to apply for a postdoctoral research position, for two years, focusing on massive star spectroscopy. The selected researcher will engage in a comprehensive analysis, employing machine learning and/or deep learning techniques, to compare synthetic spectral models with observational data. This analysis will be facilitated using our synthetic database ISOSCELES, with the goal of deriving stellar and wind parameters from massive stars. This two-year position offers a competitive salary for postdoctoral researchers in Chile (27,148,800 CLP per year), ensuring a comfortable standard of living. An additional 500,000 CLP per year is allocated for medical insurance, and a budget of 4,500,000 CLP per year is provided for travel and other research expenses, including equipment. The researcher will have access to various High-Performance Computing (HPC) facilities and a 10% allocation of Chilean telescope time. The Laboratorio Nacional de Supercómputo del Sureste de México is calling for proposals for projects that require the use of high performance computing. The objective of the call is to make available to the academic community, the computational resources of the National Supercomputing Laboratory of Southeast Mexico (LNS) for the generation of scientific knowledge, technological development, innovation and training of high quality human resources. Aimed at researchers and academics who require the use of High Performance Computing, assigned to research and higher education institutions in Mexico, students enrolled in Mexican graduate programs, as well as Mexicans who carry out graduate studies or scientific, academic or technological development collaboration stays abroad. They must register their proposals for research, technological development, innovation or human resources training projects that justify the use of the LNS High Performance Computing platform. The supercomputing resources assigned to each project may be used within a period of one year from the project start date: August 26, 2024 to August 25, 2025.

The ETH Zurich Postdoctoral Fellowship programme (ETH Fellows) supports incoming postdoctoral researchers at ETH Zurich. The programme is intended to foster young researchers who have already demonstrated scientific excellence in the early stages of their careers. Applications have to be supported by an ETH Zurich professor who is willing to act as the mentor of the fellow. A professor may only submit with one candidate in each evaluation round. There must be convincing synergies between the host (group) and the ETH Fellow. The fellowships are intended as early support towards academic independence, hence priority will be given to applicants who propose their own projects. Thus, it is important that applicants come up with their own ideas and draft the application themselves, and that the applicant and mentor have not closely collaborated prior to the fellowship. The duration of an ETH Fellowship is two years and cannot be prolonged.
